Treasurer’s report - August 2010

Cash Flow to Date:    Income   $55,265.34    Expenses   $27,921.38

 Our largest expense this month was the GRDA dock fee of $3,421.58.  The utilities were $603.48; I believe that we could reduce costs of utilities by all members being diligent in turning off all fans, lights, A/C or heaters when they leave the buildings.  Since our caretakers have left we find these items being left on continually and no one is at the club.

An additional $100.00 was donated to the Earl Rose “Learn to Sail” Memorial.  If you wish to contribute to this fund, send your check to GLSC 31700 S 605 Rd, Grove OK 74344.

We have never had insurance on our docks.  Our club could not withstand a storm disaster such as the complete destruction of the marina at Lake Thunderbird near Norman, Oklahoma.  We are currently looking into the cost of such insurance.

Extend a warm welcome to new members Jim & Darla Puckett, Edmond OK.  They have a Watkins 27 in slip C19.

Sept. 11th is work day and this is another opportunity to earn your $80 workday credit on your dues next year.  We always have a great time working together and getting to know other club members.  Come join the fun, camaraderie and help save money for the club.  After lunch we will have a question and answer session on the upcoming proposals for you to vote on this Oct.

I posted this note last month:  It’s time to rethink our club’s finances.  Last year our expenses exceeded our income and we had to dip into our emergency savings fund.    The clubs dues and slip fees have not been increased for over 20 years while the cost of operations: such as caretaker, utilities, property taxes, GRDA fees, insurance and labor have increased considerably.  This year your Board of Governors wanted to do major work on the docks but due to costs we are unable to do so at this time.  An increase in yearly dues and fees is inevitable as we must set aside money for renovations and be able to have an emergency cushion.   A committee has been formed to investigate how to increase our cash flow.  It is time to bite the bullet to resolve the clubs cash flow. Patsy Hagen, Treasurer

Note from the Vice Commodore: Thank you for all the cards and get well wishes I received after my surgery. It's been very painful but I am on the slow road to recovery.  Of course sailing weather is getting better and I just have to watch.  It must be harder on Jerryann as she recently stated that I was a "little" crabby.

Mark your Calendars:   On Saturday, Sept 11, we will have a minor work day to spruce up for the coming events, the Pink Ribbon and the Long Distance Classic.   Please be a little early as we need to start at 9AM sharp.  Please bring gloves, rakes, pruners (long and short handles) hammers and machetties for whacking big weeds.  We will be cleaning the grounds and shoreline, throwing some existing riprap around footings, cleaning Lawsons Landing and dock work.(rubrail and weeds)  We will have pizza afterwards and a question and answer session on the up coming new proposals.  So any one who has not earned their $80.00 credit this is your last chance.  Thank You from  Roy Goding, Vice Commodore

THE CAREY BAY RAFT UP – note from Marilyn Rose   July 24, 7p.m. was scheduled for the Grand Lake Sailing Club Raft Up on Carey Bay. Spend the night if you wish OR after fellowship with other Sailors - leave - your choice.  I boarded Orville Edward’s Catalina 25 and we headed for the Raft Up.  The jib was out as we reached the end of Dilar Cove.  The wind and white caps were on the move into Honey Creek.  The boat made a successful tack and we tried to head toward Shangrila BUT the wind kept us moving into Honey Creek!  We tried to tack again & again, put the jib back into it’s covered position but NO!  Could not move the boat toward Shangrila.  We said to each other: We need to return to theClub!  Orville started the motor and quickly moved toward ‘F’ Dock.  We tried to get there/ participate in the Raft Up but Mother Nature was having too much fun with providing a forceful wind and white caps!  Being part of the Carey Bay Raft Up was OUR choice but not MOTHER Nature's...maybe next time Orville’s boat can sail/motor to Carey Bay for the Grand Lake Sailing Club Raft Up.     Sailors Who Tried! Orville Edwards & Marilyn Rose

This Friday, August 20 at 5 p.m. will be our second Pink Ribbon Regatta organizational meeting in the very "cool" club house.  Your input would be appreciated on this important fundraiser for breast cancer victims and research, held in honor of one of our dear deceased club members who died of breast cancer - Carol Morton.

On Saturday, August 21 the much acclaimed and ballyhooed MOONLIGHT MADNESS Sail starts at 7:30 p.m. after a lovely potluck starting around 6 p.m.  Barbeque will be furnished by world famous chef and GLSC Board member Steve Duff, and you can bring food items to accompany the meat.  It should be cooler by then and the moon will be waxing and shining in all its glory.  Come and enjoy some GLSC fellowship as it's been even too hot to talk!  Hope to see you this weekend!   GRAND LAKE SAILING CLUB BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Marilyn Rose, Rear Commodore

Disc's..If you have any extra disc's please bring them to the Club as they are the items that when hung on the railing via string,  keep the ducks, birds from pooping on the walkway.  Thanks, Roy.

*  MOONLIGHT MADNESS.
    Saturday, August.21st, The gathering was great. The dinner was outstanding as Steve Duff brought  pans of cooked meat, & the salads & desserts brought by the members were outstanding.  We all ate to our fill in the Club House & on the porch. The COLD drinks went down easily. The iced TEA was a heavy favorite.
The boats were  Kurt Hagen, Gary Gray, Steve Duff, Orville Edwards, Glenn Page, & Marvin Jin.  Six boats filled up with passengers and motored out to the Honey Creek opening area & waited for all of us to join except Gary Gray.  Gary had the "2 want to be sailor college students" & off he sailed toward Two Tree. They will be two of the newly trained sailors. The wind was up & down then finally down until 10 PM. By that time most had motors going & back to the club except for Steve Duff, Orville, & Gary. Orville had his main up, the first time this year, and was the next one into the club. Steve  & Gary went around Two Tree, then Gary went up toward Sailboat Bridge giving the students an experience. They even were at the helm.   It was a terrific MOONLIGHT MADNESS & we all had a GREAT time. Hope the rest of the club members can join this event in 2011.  MarilynRose, Rear Commodore (I was with Orville & at the helm)
