Scuttlebutt for March/April 2010
Well, here we go again! Daylight savings time meant it was getting closer to SPRING…. YEA!
And yes, I do know we always have a spring snow – but not a BLIZZARD with snow, rain, and ice.
As I said, I don’t drive on it – Stan does – so I ask him to drive me around if I just have to go
somewhere. There is a very bad place in Tulsa on 145th & 41st Street where you KNOW there will be an accident. It’s a blind spot over a hill down to a STOP sign. Even in good weather there are many a
do-dah there. You see the tire skid marks as they head for the ditch to avoid plowing into the stopped cars at the bottom of the hill. Went by there on the way home and a fire truck & the police were sorting out the inevitable. That would certainly put a different meaning into your SPRING BREAK. Hope everyone in the Club is going cautiously and staying safe. For Pete Sake: Don’t let FRANK Beber go anywhere! Not going to quit picking on him until he stays WHOLE for a complete year.
During that balmy, tease of weather, Stan took off with a Buddy and they went Trout fishing. He had a good time, got several trout and a sunburn from the glare off the water. While he was gone, I decided to do yard work while the weather was so fantastic. At eleven a.m. I discovered I had lost the garage door opener that had been in my pocket. I just kept working since I couldn’t get into the house anyway. At six that evening, I decided Stan was having too much fun to come home early so I went to the neighbor’s to use their phone to call a Locksmith. Good News – the house is more Burglar proof than I thought, the Locksmith could not pick the locks. Bad News – I was still on the outside. Neighbor came over with her family that was visiting – we had 6 adults and 3 kids searching all
over the yard for that opener to no avail. They made me go home with them, fed me pizza and
told me I had to stay with them until Stan got home. Okay, a key is now PLANTED somewhere
on the property … hope I can just remember WHERE!
Since we have been unable to take the boat out on the Lake, I’ve been playing with the OSU
Master Gardeners group. Little did I know that I would be ‘volunteered’ to help with so
many things. I always enjoyed those Home & Garden Shows at the Fair Grounds but found
out this year that those stones for the walls, gardens & walkways don’t just FLY in there…OH!
The clubhouse gardening beds have been on my mind too. Whoever put in those Hosta
and the Daylilies did a fabulous job. The Azaleas have had a hard time of it but those other
things couldn’t have been more perfect for hands-free gardening, and it comes back and looks
lovely. There are so many talented people that take part and keep DOING things to make it work
for us all. That kitchen is still SOooo nice, Tom!
Was invited to come down to the Club Meeting by B.J. who later called to tell me I was a WIMP
for opting to stay home in this little spritzle of snow. Don’t know how many members made it
but the majority of the Board is from Grove – probably a good thing this time. Dewey said they
had a good meeting.
What has everyone been doing this Loooonnnnggggg Winter?
Spoke with Marilyn & Earl Rose about their SAILING…. it’s purely a MENTAL thing for them. Much
as they would LOVE to be sailing, especially when we get those 70 degree days, they know it’s best
to wait. They determined they had about 7 inches of the white, fluffy stuff so they are just staying
inside where it’s warm and WATCHING basketball. They are planning for a full house next week
since their families will be on Spring BREAK. David, from California, Bill from Philadelphia and
Susan from Florida are planning to get in a visit. Now if Mother Nature will just cooperate and
provide them with some nice weather.
Ed and Inge Burkholder have been moping about all winter. First, they moped in France,
Germany and Switzerland while riding motorcycle. Then they went to Greece to mope while
sailing around a bit and later they plan to go to the British Virgin Islands to meet with friends
and sail around there. Oh, did I forget that they managed to get in some Mountain Climbing
in Colorado just before the winter set in? I didn’t even put in their other cycle ride or the other 2 sailing excursions they managed to tuck into their agenda. MOPE…. I’d like to mope around with THEM! Cool!
Rod & Lois Arnall said they had 4 to 6 inches of snow and they had the pleasure of having
already received some sleet & freezing rain. Some people have all the LUCK. Rod said they would
just continue with their HIBERNATION until the weather not only cleared up but managed to STAY
that way. He said Friday was absolutely BEAUTIFUL & GORGEOUS and he said his mind
wanted to SET SAIL so badly that it wouldn’t fold around the ‘predictions’ of the weather forecast for the weekend… but it did come! Lois feeds the birds and counted no less that 8 Cardinal pair – wow – since Cardinals like to stay where they are fed, they’ll probably have them for the summer too. He and Lois got their first GRANDBABY last October and now Lois is making THINGS for that baby during this ‘stay in ‘ weather. They said they were both just “over the top” about the new grandbaby! Ah, do we see a future sailor in the family? YOU BET.
Larry and Sybil Markle are still on the RANCH. He’s been threatening to take it down a peg or two
for several years now – but tending cattle seems to be in the blood. They probably have a list a mile
long of “things we are going to do when” but we’ll just consider ourselves lucky if we can goad them
into getting to the Club for a weekend or two this summer. They always come for Work Day - think
they should be here just for a PLAY Day too.
Wonder if all the wasps & bees are out of the wooden frames for the camp sites? Last person
to work that area found out the critters had taken up residence there and HE had several
sting bites to prove it. Do we still have our Wood Chuck at the Oar House? How is the FOX
doing? We have Deer, Skunk, Opossum, Owl and lots of Geese. It will be so nice to be able to
come to the Lake and make them MAKE ROOM FOR US to sail, camp, and relax in conversation
with friends. Don Buoen can start up the fire pit for us to cozy around and Bonita Maddox can
teach us all how to make SMOORES again. Those are addictive!
